Script tattoos on upper arm and chest
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop shows a person from the chest to the hip, wearing a fitted pale pink cut-out dress with thin straps. Black script lettering runs along the raised upper arm and across the upper chest near the collarbone, and the wording is too small to read. The photograph is taken against a busy, colourful painted backdrop, with the figure centred and the hand resting on the hip.

Dear Nell, you'll laugh when you see the state of the back room. Mr Okafor has gone out to the chandler's without his glasses, which means I have the whole place to myself and the big canvas on the easel, the one with the bruised plum sweep and the ochre that refuses to dry before Thursday. He says a painting is finished when the corner has been signed, and he has never once let me near that corner, so I have been practising my capitals on the offcuts all week until my R looks like his and my S looks like a dropped stitch.

He taught me lettering on the glass of the shop front in Leeds before he ever let me touch a canvas. His rule was that every letter must be as loose as the paint around it, or the sign would look like it had been argued over. I thought it was a funny sort of rule for a man who paints so tightly, until I found the card in his bench drawer this morning, tucked under a tin of rigger brushes. It had my name on it in his grey hand, dated the week I arrived, and underneath, in smaller letters: Ada, hand steady, do not let her thin the lines.
I sat down on his stool for a long time after that. The light came through the skylight and lay across the plum and the ochre in long stripes, and the canvas looked more like a room than a picture. So I took the fine brush, dipped it in the grey, and wrote my own name in the bottom corner, small enough that you would have to know to look. The lines wobbled a little, as they always do, and I left them that way.
