Black fine line script reading I carry your heart across the upper back near the shoulder, shown on a woman in a dark off-shoulder top against a white background.

Fine line script quote across the upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a woman's upper back and shoulder shows the words I carry your heart written in thin, cursive black script that runs diagonally along the base of the neck. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the lettering sits neatly across the skin. The plain white background and dark top keep the focus on the tattoo, and only the lower part of the face is visible.

The last tent came down in Grantham on a wet Tuesday, and I was the one who folded the canvas, because nobody else had the back for it any more. Uncle Teodor would have sworn at me for working the ropes with my bad wrist, but he was asleep in the cab of the lorry with his cap over his face, and the rest of the company had already gone off to find work in Skegness and the warehouses.

Delphine had walked the high wire for nine seasons before her knees gave out. Then she sold tickets, then she sold her grandmother's brass lamp, and then, the spring before, she simply left with a suitcase and a man who sold kitchen units. She didn't write. What she left behind was her grey cardigan on the hook in our caravan, the one with the darned elbows. I took it down every night for a month and didn't wash it.

On the last night I drove the lorry to a service station outside Peterborough, where someone at the Skegness fair had said she was stacking shelves. I didn't go in. I sat with the engine ticking and the heater rattling, and I read the old handbill I'd torn off the ticket booth, FEARLESS DELPHINE in red letters going brown at the edges. On the back I wrote the one sentence I had never managed to say to her, then folded the paper small enough to fit in the cardigan pocket.

I left the cardigan on the passenger seat for the morning. Let her find it, I thought, and carry the rest herself. Then I drove back to the empty field and slept in the cab with my hands folded over nothing at all, the way Uncle Teodor used to sleep.
