Dear Ede, the frost has got into the north field again and the surveyors have been out three days with their poles and little red flags. This morning I stood at the gate with the flask going cold and watched a young man set a flag on the rise by the old ash, walk exactly three hundred paces left and set another, then do it a third time, so the flags made a triangle with the ash at its point. When I asked what the tree was for, he said it was the only fixed thing in the field, and everything else had to be measured from it.

Dad would have sworn at them. He trusted his own eye for forty years, and now there is a drain under the lower meadow nobody knew about, and the water finds it every thaw. The young man showed me his page: three small triangles, one upright and two sat beside it, and under them a column of pencilled numbers so faint I had to hold it to the window. He said they told the men where to dig in spring. I said they looked like a child's drawing of a tent. He laughed and said most good surveying does.

I have been thinking about that ash since. Its roots go down into the same clay as the drain. Tomorrow I will walk the three flags myself, count my steps, and see whether the numbers agree with what Dad always said about where the water comes from. If they do, I will ring you on Sunday from the box by the church and you can tell me I was right, which you will enjoy far too much.
