Fine line script quote on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line tattoo in black ink reads 'this too shall pass' in cursive script across the inner forearm. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering set in a slightly slanted, handwritten style. The background is softly out of focus, with a dark area at the top and warm light at the bottom, and the skin tone is the only colour in the frame.

The ewe with the torn ear had her lamb at four this morning, up in the top shed where the straw is dry, and I sat with her on an upturned bucket until the light came grey through the slats. Your father would have said she was too old for it. She was not too old. She is stubborn, like the rest of us, and the lamb is up and sucking now, and the ear will heal crooked, which is how most things heal.

The pipes froze again on Tuesday. I have been carrying water from the trough by hand, two buckets each way, and my shoulder has opinions about it. Mrs Hadley from the lane came up with a flask of soup on Wednesday and stayed an hour, which I did not expect and did not mind. She asked after you. I said you were somewhere with proper central heating and no sheep, and she laughed the way people do when they are being kind.
I found your old tin pencil case in the drawer under the Aga, the one with the dog on the lid. Inside was the card you copied out in school, the saying in your handwriting, leaning so far to the right it nearly fell over. This too shall pass. I thought it a strange thing for a boy of nine to choose, and I still think so, but I have started saying it to myself over the buckets. It is no use as a comfort. It is useful as a reason to keep lifting.
Ring when the signal is good. The gate is still broken, so come in by the back.
Love, Mum
