Fine line script tattoo on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small handwritten script phrase is tattooed in fine white or pale ink on the side of the ribcage, just below the armpit. The thin, delicate linework is set against smooth skin, with the black top's white-striped neckline framing the lower edge. The background is softly blurred outdoors, keeping the focus on the tattoo.

Rise and shine, it said, and nothing more, and beneath it a little sun with too many rays.

He left it on the kitchen table the morning he walked into the birch wood behind Ashcombe to top up the bird tables, a habit he kept long after the parish council asked him to stop. The sun came through in long pale bars, low and stubborn, and I stood among the ferns until the frost on them turned to water and ran off the fronds. It felt like being scolded and forgiven in the same breath, which was exactly how he used to say good morning.
I went down to the shop on Market Street that afternoon and had the phrase inked small, in his own loose slant, where a strap would hide it. Mum cried when she saw it, then laughed, then made us both a cup of tea we forgot to drink.
