Small CAT lettering on the neck
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of the word CAT in black ink sits on the back of the neck, just below the hairline. The letters are thin, simple and capitalised, with a soft, even line. The photo is a bright, low-contrast close-up with a white background, showing the hands and white clothing around the neck.

She fed it salt herring from the winter barrel and said nothing to the three carters sitting by the fire. They had come up the pass with a cart of wool and their tempers were short. Old Tam Brisk said cats were bad luck in a snowbound house. His wife said cats were the only sensible guests. They argued until the candles guttered.
On the tenth morning the drift against the back door had reached the sill, and the widow's girl, Hanne, went out with a shovel to clear the well path. She did not come back for an hour. When they found her she was standing in a ring of paw prints that circled the woodpile, holding a flat grey stone with the letters CAT scratched into it, neat as a clerk's hand. The cat sat on the woodpile and washed its face.
Nobody could say who had taught it letters. The widow kept the stone above the hearth. Tam Brisk said nothing more about luck. By the thaw the carters had all learned to write their own names, because each night the cat had walked the length of the table and stopped in front of whichever of them was pretending he could not read.
