Fine line script lettering in dark blue ink reading elgar on the inside of a wrist.

Fine line script word on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single word written in thin, joined cursive script sits on the inside of a wrist. The linework is fine and even, and the ink is a dark blue-black with no visible shading. The pale skin and plain background keep the focus on the small lettering, which sits slightly off centre on the wrist.

The band has already started when you see him by the pillar, a thin man in a grey waistcoat who is counting under his breath, one two three, as if the floorboards might forget the time without him. Nobody at the Sandbeck Ballroom dances the quickstep the way he does, stiff at the shoulders and loose at the knees, and when the song ends he simply nods at you as though you have already agreed to something.

Elgar, he says, when you ask. Just the one name, like a horse or a hymn. He runs the Tuesday class for the widows from the terraces on Cross Street, and he writes the steps on the back of pub beer mats in a joined-up hand that loops and drops below the line, so that your partner always has to read them upside down. You learn the box step. You learn that the trick is not the feet but the pause before the turn, the half second where nobody is leading.

By October the hall has emptied to a dozen couples and a caretaker with a mop. Elgar hands you a beer mat with the last sequence on it, then takes it back and crosses something out. "Wrong," he says. "Lead with the wrist, not the hand." You try it. The turn comes out clean, and for the first time the room seems to lean in to watch.

He folds the mat into your palm and closes your fingers over it. You keep it, and years later you still turn your hand over without thinking, the way he taught you, to feel for the pause before the turn.
