Infinity symbol with numerals on wrist

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of an infinity symbol tattoo on the inner wrist, with a hand turned palm up and a dark leather surface and tiled floor in the background. The symbol is drawn in black linework with a small stylised numeral sitting inside the right loop. Purple shading fills part of the left loop and gives the design a soft wash of colour against the black lines.

Nell Abernathy kept a tin of loose ends in the lift shaft of Harrow Court, where the wind came through the grilles and the pigeons roosted on the ledge outside. Everyone on the estate knew she could mend anything that had been knitted, pulled or unpicked, and most of them believed she could mend a stair that had gone wrong too, though nobody had ever asked her to try.

One wet Thursday a lad called Reuben Price came up to the thirteenth floor with a blue cardigan over his arm. The cuff had unravelled back to a single thread, and the thread was still running loose down the sleeve. He said his nan had knitted it the winter before she moved to Margate, and he wanted it right before Sunday. Nell sat him on the upturned crate, took the cardigan on her knee and began to work.

She did not use the blue. She took a length of purple from the Tuesday knitting group's bag and laid a black thread alongside it, then made a figure of eight that folded back on itself and never quite closed. Inside the right loop she stitched a small 52, the number of the lift that had stopped at the twelfth floor the year the lights failed. Reuben asked what the numbers were for. Nell bit the thread and said a loop has no end to find, so you only need to remember which floor you started from.

He carried the cardigan down nineteen flights in the dark, the purple catching the torchlight at every landing. At the bottom the lift hummed on for the first time in a month, and the pigeons on the ledge stayed put.
