Fine line sprig on the upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A small sprig of leaves on a slim stem runs diagonally across the back of the upper arm, with a few faint, wispy lines branching off near the end. The linework is delicate and the leaves are shaded lightly in a dark green-grey ink. The arm fills the frame against a plain black dress and a softly blurred room with shelves and a wooden table.

The carrier came down the Caddow road with a cutting wrapped in wet sacking held against her chest, because the old women at Hollin Wells had told her the heat would take it otherwise. No rain had fallen on the flats in three summers. Each mile the wind laid sand across the tarmac in long pale tongues, and she walked on the white line so the lorries could see her coming and slow down.

At the fourth milestone she sat on the bank to drink. A boy was there with a thin goat tied to a fence post, and he asked what she was carrying. She said rosemary, or thyme, she could never remember which, only that her grandmother said it grew wherever someone had been kind. The boy told her nothing grew out here. She opened the sacking enough to show him three grey-green leaves on a slim stem, with faint lines lifting off the top like breath on a cold window. He touched a leaf, and the sharp smell of it made him sneeze.
She reached the well at dusk and dug a hole with a tin spoon in the lee of the stone wall, where the sand had banked soft. She set the stem in and packed the earth round it with her palms. In the morning the boy came up the road with a jug from the cistern and poured a ring of water around the roots, slowly, the way his mother must have taught him, and did not say why.
By the next summer the wall was green on its sheltered side, and travellers stopped there to fill their bottles. Nobody remembered who had brought the first sprig. The boy did, and when he was old he told it plainly to anyone who asked. The new shoots, he always said, had already started lifting from the top, thin as breath, reaching for the road.
