You'll laugh, but I counted the grey fence posts the whole way, the way you used to count the cattle guards on Uncle Walt's road. Nineteen posts to a mile. I got it wrong twice and had to start over.

The room above Mrs Pruitt's shop smells of paraffin and oranges. She says the landlady's son drew the state of Oklahoma on the wall in pencil the day he moved out, and nobody has had the heart to paint over it. I haven't told her the shape is slightly wrong. The panhandle is too long, I think, though I suppose I'm the one who has been looking at maps all my life and not the other way round.

I went down to the telephone box this evening and rang the post office, the way Father always said to, and a man there asked me where I was calling from. I said Oklahoma. He said it back to me like he was checking it was still there. I stood in the box with the coins in my glove and didn't say anything for a while.

I am writing this on the back of your last letter, so forgive the crease. Tell Mama the wheat is up. Tell her I have a job starting Monday at the depot and that I put a little money by already. And tell her I am well, because I am, Nell. I believe I am going to be.
