Black and white photo of a thin single-line swirl tattoo curling across the inner forearm near the wrist.

Fine line swirl on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close black and white photograph of a forearm with a single thin black line tattoo forming an open curl, similar to a wave or spiral. The linework is fine and even with no shading, and the tattoo sits diagonally across the arm with the hand resting at the top left. The image is greyscale, so the ink reads as solid black against the skin.

A lad came up from Penzance with a paper suitcase and a bit of sea glass in his pocket, saying he was after a room for a fortnight. Mrs Pargeter gave him the attic, because nobody else would take it, and because he had kind eyes and a cough.

He drew all the time. Pencil on the backs of menus, pencil on the wallpaper when he thought nobody was looking. Always the same stroke, one line that rose off the page and rolled over on itself, then let go. He told me it was the bit of water just before it breaks, the moment it hasn't decided yet. I said it looked like a snail that had given up. He laughed so hard he had to sit on the stairs.

He left on the Tuesday with the suitcase and no goodbye. Under the attic window I found the glass he'd carried, and beside it one curl drawn in soft pencil, with a note that said only: hold on to this one, it doesn't finish. I've held it fifty years. Ada says that's sentiment. I say it's the only thing in this house that never got wet, and I'm not about to let anyone tell me different.
