Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a triquetra-style knot made from three looping lines, with an extra inner loop at the top, sits centrally on the back of the neck. The linework is thin and even, with the design drawn in outline and no shading or fill. The skin is pale and the photo is taken from behind, with dark hair and a grey tank top visible around the tattoo.

Every August the old orchard at Hollin Bottom dropped its windfalls faster than the pickers could gather them, and the three Marrow sisters would walk the rows with baskets on their hips, counting. Nell counted the apples, Bet counted the wasps, and little Ada, who was seven and had no patience for sums, counted the crows that sat on the wall and pretended not to watch.

One year the eldest tree, a crooked codlin nobody had grafted in living memory, stopped bearing. Its leaves went the colour of stewed tea, and the fruit that did form was hard and bitter. The vicar's wife said it wanted cutting down. Nell said it wanted a knot tied round its roots, the way her gran had told it, and nobody believed her until Ada, climbing the wall at dusk, found a length of grey string caught in the bark with a crow sitting on it.

They tied it that night. Nell made the loops with her thumbs, one over, one under, and Bet pulled them tight, while Ada knelt in the wet grass and said the words she had made up, which were mostly the names of the crows. Round they went, three bows meeting at a point, and a fourth loop at the top for whoever had asked.

In the morning the codlin had a single pale blossom on its highest branch, and the crow was gone. By Michaelmas the tree was heavy with small red apples, sweet to the core, and the sisters counted every one of them, and for once the count came out even.
