The ferry men at Corran Narrows say the fair came over on the tide the year the bridge washed out, three painted wagons and a canvas tent the colour of old porter. Nobody remembered booking it. The woman who ran the ring toss had a rope of knotted grey cord that she never let anyone touch, and she tied it round her wrist every morning before she opened the gate.

Her name was Idris, though the children called her Mother Loop, because she could tie a length of cord into three rings that hung one through another and never came apart. She would hold it up under the lamps and turn it slowly, and the crowd would go quiet. A small loop at the top, she said, for what you have already done. A loop in the middle, for what you are doing. And the wide one at the bottom, that holds the other two, for what you cannot yet see.

A boy named Tam Hebble, who swept the sawdust and owed the fair a day's wages, asked her once what happened if one loop was cut. She didn't look up from her cord. Then the other two fall through, she said, and you have to tie them back by hand, in the dark, with no one to show you how.

The fair left on the next high tide, and Tam found the ring toss still standing on the mudflat in the morning, every peg in place. On the wet sand beside it lay a single grey cord, tied in three rings, with the middle one pulled tight. He picked it up, and it was warm.
