Fine line whale on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm and wrist showing a thin black outline of a whale that curves across the wrist, with a small bird shape above it. The linework is fine and unshaded, with no colour in the ink. A braided bracelet sits on the wrist, and the background is a grey cobbled pavement.

The gull had been on the rail since Tuesday, which Mr Haddow said was a bad sign, though he said most things were a bad sign once the glass started falling. I told him the bird only wanted the herring guts and he could keep his omens to himself. We were eleven hours out from Stornoway with the hold half full and the wind backing round to the north, and I had the wheel because my hands were the only ones aboard that did not shake in the cold.

Then the water beside the hull swelled up grey and slow, and a whale came out of it so close I could have counted the barnacles along her flank. She blew once, a sound like a kettle left too long, and turned beneath us with her long back rolling over the sea. The gull dropped off the rail and hung above her spout, wings going as if they were the only thing keeping it up. Haddow crossed himself, which he had not done since his wife's funeral, and nobody laughed at him.
We did not bring the harpoon up. Father always said a creature that comes to see you is owed the courtesy of being looked at. So we watched her go under, the tail lifting clean and black, and the gull went with her, dipping low and climbing again, as though it knew the way.
That night I wrote it in the log in pencil, because the ink had frozen in the bottle. Whale, starboard, close. Gull followed to the Minch. Then, because it seemed a thing to show someone, I drew the two of them small in the margin, the great curved back and the speck above it. Haddow looked at the page for a long time in the morning and said the bird had got the better of the bargain.
