The swallows came back to Carrick Hollin the same week the surveyor's van slid into the ditch on the lane, and Ada spent the first morning of their return up the gatehouse ladder, counting. Eleven cups of mud sat under the arch, pressed to the stone like thumbprints. Someone had already drawn a chalk X beside the south wall, the wall the parish council wanted pulled down before the autumn gales. Her grandmother had made her learn the rule before she could read: you never disturb a nest with eggs in it, and you never let the men with the clipboards tell you a castle is only stone.

The twelfth nest was empty. Its rim had cracked on one side, and a few grey feathers stuck to the mortar like something left behind by a careless visitor. Ada sat on the ladder with the chalk in her fist and felt the cold of the old masonry come up through her boots. The council letter was folded in her coat pocket, three paragraphs long, and it did not mention swallows at all.
She was still deciding what to write back when a bird came through the arch low over the moat, fast and straight, its forked tail opening and closing like a pair of shears. It banked once above the empty cup, hung there, and then dropped to the eleventh nest where a small head was already waiting, mouth open, in the dark.
Ada left the ladder where it stood. She put the chalk back in her pocket, and the X by the south wall stayed exactly as it was, unrubbed, until the rain came.
