Fine line world map on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the upper back of a woman with her hair pulled into a loose braid, viewed from behind. A thin, single-line outline of the world map sits between the shoulder blades, showing the continents with no shading or fill. The image is black and white, with a plain pale background and a white strap visible across the lower back.

Her father had sold charts to sailors for thirty years. Every continent on his walls was shaded and hatched and bruised with colour, and he said the sea was only a rumour until it was printed. Ines took a hair-fine nib and traced only the coastlines. No fill. No gold cartouche. When he asked what she was doing, she said the land did not need dressing, only outlining, so a person could see exactly where it stopped.
By dawn the sheet was pinned above the counter. Ships came in off the bar with crews who swore they had passed the bulge of Africa and the tail of Australia, and each man stood beneath that sheet and found his own port, the thin black line holding him like a hand on the shoulder. Her father never sold it. He hung it over the door, where the cold blew in.
So when the fog comes up the river tonight, remember that the world is only ever a line, and a line is a thing you can follow home. Now blow out that lamp, and mind the step on the way out.
