Outline world map on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her hair in a braid is seen from behind, showing a small outline world map tattoo centred on her upper back. The continents are drawn in thin, single black lines with no shading or fill. The image is in greyscale and the plain, light background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

One night a stranger came in with a cloth folded under his arm and asked her to draw him the world as it stood, not as the schoolbooks had it. Maud took up her pen and a pot of ink the colour of a crow's wing. She started at the western edge of the sea and worked slowly, a line at a time, so the coasts came out thin and careful, with no shadow laid in to make them heavy. When she reached the far south she lifted the pen and said she could not finish the island at the bottom, for she had never been further than the next village.
The stranger smiled and paid her with a single silver button. Years later, when the fair had gone south and the carousel rusted in a field, Tobias found the cloth pinned inside the lid of his own trunk. The little southern island had been finished in the same thin hand, and beside it someone had written one word in pencil: Come.
