Fire sprite with banner on the foot

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon fire sprite with large eyes and an open mouth sits within a mass of orange and red flames, with blue-grey shading at the edges of the fire. Below it, a pale banner with dark outlines carries the lettering MAY ALL YOUR BACON BURN, with small flames along its base. The bold outlines and saturated colour are shown on the top of a foot against a white textured background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the time the second trawler came in, the sprite had already eaten two rashers off the griddle and was sulking at the back of the range like a cat that had been shut out. You open the flue to coax him out, and he puffs up to the size of a bread bin, eyes rolling at the bacon tray. "Not a crumb," you tell him. "Mrs Pell wants breakfast at six, crisp, not cremated."

He has a name, Sooty Joe, which you gave him at nine when he first spat blue sparks at your dad's chip pan, and he answers to nothing else. Outside, the harbour lamps come on one at a time, and the gulls squabble over a dropped crab claw on the slip. Inside, the sprite does what he always does when he wants a favour. He flickers low, then flares so hot the fat in the pan pops like a rifle, and you swear, and he laughs, a sound like coal settling.

So you make the deal, the same one as every winter. Keep the range roaring through the night and he keeps the rashers from burning, which is the only reason the chalk sign over the door stays true. He has never forgiven you for the spelling you chose for it. Still, when the first boats knock against the quay, every plate goes out golden, and the sprite perches on the windowsill in the grey light, pleased with himself, while you pretend not to be.
