The man at lane six had declared a single cardboard tube and a pair of sensible shoes, and the X-ray said otherwise. I turned the screen round so Dev could see. Something yellow was folded into the bottom of the bag, knees tucked up under its chin, a small gold crown sitting squarely on its head as if it had been asked to wait in the queue and was not pleased about it.

'It's a dog,' Dev said. 'It's a dog with a crown.' 'Then declare it,' I said. The man, whose name was Pascal and whose sunburn was the exact shape of a hat, shrugged and said it was a family heirloom that stretched. I told him heirlooms didn't stretch. He unzipped the bag and the dog unfolded itself onto the steel counter, long as a ferry ramp, draping its arms over the edge and grinning at me with the enormous patience of something that had been folded for four hours. Its tail made one slow circle. Behind it, light fanned across the ceiling tiles in bands of red, orange and green, the way sun does off a wet pavement.

We had forms for pets, forms for plants, forms for wooden crates of Bordeaux, but nothing for a dog that could reach the length of a lane. Dev wanted to fetch the duty inspector. I wanted my tea. The dog looked from one of us to the other, then deliberately tapped the counter twice with a stretchy paw, the way you knock on a door you already know will open. I stamped the form. Under reason for entry I wrote stretching. Pascal thanked me. The dog winked, the rainbow on the wall flared gold, and the whole lane went quiet behind us.
