Purple bra with flames on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A purple bra with white lace trim and a small pink bow sits at the centre of the design, with orange and red flames rising behind it. The outlines are bold and dark, and the flames shade from yellow at the base to red at the tips. The tattoo fills most of the frame on a forearm, with a tattoo chair and equipment visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sparkler was meant for the cake. Instead it caught the washing line at the back of the Coldharbour Hall car park, where Maureen had hung her lilac bra to dry after the morning rain, and by the time I got the bucket off the caterers' van, the thing was blazing like a small, indignant lantern.

Maureen had bought it for her daughter's wedding in 1987 and had never once worn it for anything less formal. It had white lace round the cups and a pink bow sitting in the middle like a cherry on a trifle. 'Leave it,' she said, arms folded, watching the flames climb the strap. 'It's had a good innings.' Her son-in-law, Dev, was already tugging the line down with a tea towel wrapped round his hand.

We stood in a loose ring while the bra smouldered on the gravel, the bride in her veil and wellies beside us. Nobody could say who had the sparkler now. Maureen picked up the blackened cups with a pair of barbecue tongs and laughed until she had to sit on the bins. Then the bride said she wanted that exact bra in the photos, scorched or not, and the photographer, who had been hiding behind a Volvo, took eleven frames of it.

Forty years on, the cups hang in a frame above the bar at the Coldharbour, the bow still pink, the lace still curling at the edges. I was the one with the bucket. Nobody remembers that, but I do, every time someone asks why the pub has a fire-blackened bra on the wall.
