Colour tattoo of the blue furry monster Grover holding a green GROVER name sign, on the upper arm.

Grover from Sesame Street on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the blue, furry Sesame Street character Grover, with large white eyes with black pupils, a pink nose and a red collar, standing above a green sign with a yellow border reading GROVER. The fur is drawn with short, scratchy outlines and soft blue shading, and the linework is bold and cartoonish. Colour is used throughout, and the tattoo sits centrally on a pale arm against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the village of Holloway Ford, where the river marked the border between two kingdoms, a blue creature called Grover lived under the old toll bridge. Every spring he climbed the bank with his name painted on a green board and hung round his neck on a string, because the guard at the crossing had once turned back a traveller who could not say who he was.

The guard, Sergeant Mabry, kept a ledger with a column for names and a column for reasons. Grover had no reasons to give, only a fondness for the cabbage fields on the far side, where the bees were thick and the apples dropped early. Each year he stood before the barrier with his fur dripping and his round white eyes wide, and each year Mabry asked him to spell it out.

One autumn Grover arrived without the board. The river had taken it. He opened his mouth and found only a low, hopeful hum. Mabry sighed and turned the ledger to a blank page. Then Grover fished from his pocket a scrap of green paper with a yellow edge, the last corner of the board, its letters worn to smudges. Mabry knew them anyway, having read them every spring for eleven years.

"Grover," she said, and lifted the barrier. He thanked her, shook the river from his coat and went on towards the apples. She wrote the name in the first column, in fresh ink, because someone had to remember him when he forgot.
