Fish, anchor and heart tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small row of three black outline motifs sits on the side of an ankle: a fish symbol, a thin anchor and a simple heart, spaced evenly. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is black on pale skin. The close crop centres the tattoo against a dark shoe and a red background.

Mind the lift, it sulks between seven and eight, always has. Sit down, Kieran, you're frightening the pigeons. Right. This is about Walter Dunmore, who lived on the eleventh floor of Hollin Court when the lift still had brass on the doors, and who kept a tin of fish hooks under his settee because he swore the Humber would come for him one day.

Walter had been a deckhand out of Grimsby until his knee gave out. Every Sunday he limped down all eleven flights to sit on the canal wall and feed bread to the ducks. One Sunday a girl called Marion, who ran the chip van by the footbridge, leaned over her counter and asked what the thin black anchor on his ankle was for. He told her it was for holding on. She said that was a poor answer from a man who'd spent twenty years at sea. So he took the biro from her apron pocket and drew her a fish, the old sign people scratched in the dust when they were frightened and needed to know who was on their side.

Marion said the heart was obviously the important bit. Walter said it was the bit he hadn't finished deciding about, and that a man who'd been at sea twenty years learned to say the true thing last. She threw a chip at him. He caught it in his mouth, which surprised them both, and that was the first of all the Sundays after.

Walter never did say the true thing. He died in the March they started pulling down the canal wall, and when his flat was cleared Marion went through the tin of hooks and found, underneath, a biro with her name written on the clip in her own hand, which she'd never noticed going missing. Go on, Kieran, press the button. It'll come when it's ready.
