Black fine line script reading He walks with me beside a small fish outline, tattooed on the side of a foot.

Fish symbol and script quote on foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small outlined fish symbol sits to the left of the words He walks with me, written in a flowing cursive script in black ink. The linework is thin and even, with the capital H decorated by a looping flourish. The photograph is warm-toned and shows the tattoo against pale skin, with a dark background framing the foot.

Dear Ruth,

The tide gave back the causeway again this morning, and with it the path we have been arguing about since March. You will laugh, but I have been out there every dawn with the measuring chain, and I am now certain the stones were laid by someone who wanted to be followed. Each slab has a mark cut at its corner, a small curved fish no bigger than a thumbnail, and beside every third one someone has scratched words into the mortar with a nail. Yesterday it was He walks with me, in letters that loop like a bell rope.

Old Tomasz from the pumping station says the words are older than the sea wall, older than the drowning of Canvey, which he insists was before the first flood. He says his grandmother used to sing them over the nets. I think he is only being kind to me, because I am the only one on this coast who still thinks the stones are worth lifting.

Last night I could not sleep, so I walked the causeway with the lamp. Halfway out the water was at my ankles and the mud was soft and warm, and I stopped at a slab with the fish cut into it and a line of script above it. I stood there a long while. Nothing about the place seemed lonely. The lamp threw my shadow long across the flats, and I thought of you on the mainland, counting your own lamps.

I am sending the rubbing with this letter. Do not let Dad fold it.

Love, Mae
