The catch was thin this week, mackerel mostly, and the men are sour about the price the buyers gave us at the quay.

I have been thinking about the wave you drew on my hand last summer, the one that curled back on itself like a question. I never got round to thanking you for it. I kept it in my wallet for the whole trip out past the Runnel Stone, folded small, and when the swell came up white off the bow I took it out and looked at the curl of it until my stomach settled. Silly, I know. Skipper laughed at me and then asked me to draw him one too.

We go out again Tuesday on the tide before dawn. If the weather holds I will bring you back a crab the size of a dinner plate, and if it doesn't, I will sit on the slip and watch the water do its business. Tell the little ones the sea is only going where it always goes.
