Fishing hook piercing skin on a foot
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A photograph of a foot showing a fishing hook tattoo that curves from the top of the foot towards the toes, with its barb appearing to break through a torn, wound-like area of skin. The hook is rendered with smooth grey and blue shading, dark outlines and highlights to give a three-dimensional effect. The wound uses red and brown tones, and the composition is a close view of the foot against a light background.

The last bill the Dunne & Marrow Travelling Show ever printed promised three nights on the Severn meadows, and the only people who came were a ferryman, two gulls and a boy who wanted his penny back. Ada Dunne counted the takings on the tailboard of the wagon, found four pennies, counted them again, and found the same four pennies. Behind her the big top hung over the wet grass like a sheet on a line, patched where the lion had chewed it.

Her son Tobias had not performed in a year. He had lost his nerve on the wire somewhere between Gloucester and the bridge, and since then he sat by the river with a tin of worms and a bent length of steel, saying the water owed them a turn. On the third evening he cast into the brown current with a crust of Sunday bread on the barb. Nothing came for an hour. Then the line went taut and came up heavy, and what dripped out of the reeds was not a salmon but a brass ferry bell, green as a pond, its clapper still tied on with wire.
When he rang it the herons went up off the flats in a grey wheel, and the ferryman's wife came down the lane with a lantern, then the publican, then four children who had never seen a circus and did not know they were late for one. Ada hung the bell on the tent pole and the hook above the ticket table, barb turned toward the door so that nobody would walk out without paying. They paid in eggs, cider and promises to come back, and the show went on, one ring, one bell, one hook, for as long as the river kept sending them back.
