Mervyn had been down in the trench for eleven days when the reef fish started calling him a goblin, and he decided it was time to go up. He found the work pinned to a barnacle off Folkestone: a basking shark wanted a lookout for the nightly tanker run, pay in plankton, no questions about teeth. The basking shark was called Ada. She was the size of a bus and about as keen on conversation, drifting under the harbour lamp with her mouth open, filtering the glow. Every so often she tilted her great grey head at him as if he were a mildly stupid rumour.

"You're in my light," she said, which was fair, because he was.

On the third night a blue mako came slicing through the lanes with a crate lashed to his dorsal fin, grinning like he'd been to a salon. He swore he was only on a makeover tour and that the sardines were a gift for his cousin. Mervyn kept his bigeyes on the crate the whole time, and when the mako finally tried to dive under a trawler's keel, the crate snagged on the rope and spilled open across the harbour wall. Ada opened her mouth and took the whole glittering mess in one slow, grey breath. Mervyn watched the last silver fish vanish into her, then turned back to the dark water, where nothing else was moving.
