You are up the ladder in Mr Pascoe's Bramley trees in the last week of August, when the wasps have got drunk on the windfalls and the light goes thick and gold over the cliff edge. Below the top field the orchard tips toward the sea, and every apple that drops on the slope rolls past the hedge and over the lip, where nobody has ever bothered to go looking for them.

Pascoe's grandson, Dennis, says the sea takes a tithe. He says the fin you saw last Tuesday, a dark blade cutting the chop beyond the rocks, was the sea's collector come for its share. You laugh and hand him a basket. He does not laugh back. He has been counting the apples that roll over the edge since June, he says, and there are more each week, not fewer.

On the Friday you take the goat path down with a sack of the bruised ones and stand on the rocks with the wind in your collar. The waves come in in the same two uneven lines they always do. You throw the apples one by one. For a long time nothing happens. Then a grey shape turns under the swell, the fin breaks the surface slow and certain, and it takes the first apple from the water before it can sink.

At the gate Dennis is waiting with the trug. He looks at the empty sack, then at your wet sleeve, and says nothing. He only nods up towards the top field, where the ladders are already leaning in the long light, waiting for September.
