Whale tail, waves and birds design

Dotwork · Mixed · Flash

A black ink drawing of a whale tail rises from a mass of blue watercolour waves with curling crests on either side. Five black birds fly around the top of a thin circle outlined with pink dots. The linework is fine and stippled on the tail and waves, and the blue wash is shaded from light to dark on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The kettle boiled dry twice before Ada Pringle admitted she was watching the sea instead of the bread. Her father stood on the harbour wall arguing with Mr Coates about whether the herring had gone north for good. Out past the point the gulls had stopped squabbling over the fish guts and begun to circle, five of them, turning round a patch of water as if stirring a pot.

She ran without her shawl. By the time she reached the slipway the swell had lifted, the water went from grey to a deep ink blue, and then the tail rose out of it, black and fluked and huge, sheeting water off in curls like the carved scrolls on the chapel pews. It hung there the length of a breath. Mr Coates said it was the light off the Dunstan rocks. Her father said nothing, only took the pipe from his mouth and held it like a candle.

Nobody in Carrow Haven believed in whales any more, not since the last boat went out in 1938 and came back short two men. Ada didn't argue. She fetched the stub of blue chalk from the hopscotch tin and drew the thing on the slipway: the tail, the wave crests curling like fiddleheads, a ring of dots round the lot. The birds she drew last, five quick black shapes.

The tide came in at four and took the drawing by six. In the morning the chalk had washed pale, but a single gull stood on the bottom step looking at the place where the sea had been. When Ada came down with her father's flask it lifted off and went round the point in a wide, unhurried circle, as if it had only been waiting for someone to notice.
