Five feathers with Psalm 91:4 lettering
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A drawing of five feathers of differing sizes and angles, arranged in a row above two lines of spaced capital lettering that read Under His wings you will find refuge. A smaller line of text beneath gives the reference Psalm ninety one verse four. The feathers are rendered in fine, shaded pencil-like linework in black and grey on a plain white background, and the composition is centred and symmetrical.

Dear Ilya,

They let us sit in the gymnasium of the old customs house, under strip lights that hum like a fridge. Mama has stopped asking the clerk the same question, which I think is worse than when she asked it every ten minutes. The children have made a den out of blankets stretched between two folding tables, and Petra has been teaching the little one to count to five by pointing at the things we brought. Five bags, five cups, five coats. I keep counting too.
On the bridge this morning, before the guards shouted at us to walk single file, a wind came up off the river and a grey feather spun down past my face and landed on the railing. Then another by the far post, and another in the reeds. By the time we reached the white line I had five, each a different size, as if someone had plucked a bird and shared it out fairly. I did not tell Mama. She would have said it was bad luck to pick up anything from a border, and perhaps she is right, but I kept them in the lining of my coat.
The officer with the clipboard read our names back to us, slowly, and one by one he stamped them. When he reached mine he paused over the spelling and asked whether I had anyone on the other side. I said, yes, you, and he wrote something down that I could not read upside down.
I will send this with the Red Cross man, who says the post may reach you by spring. Keep the bread knife. I am sorry about the dog. I have pressed the feathers flat inside the envelope, so you will have to be gentle when you open it.
Count to five for me, Ilya. Love, Dasha
