A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tomas, the boat came in late again, and Mrs Keane at the quay swears she saw you wave from the stern before the mist took the harbour wall. I am writing this because the envelope on the mantel says His beloved in my hand, and I have been looking at it for three days without knowing what to put inside.

You will remember the summer the lettering man came over on the Tuesday ferry with his ink pots wrapped in oilcloth. He sat in the back of the shop and wrote out names for anyone who paid him a shilling, and you paid him two so he would make your words look like they belonged on a church board. He wrote them out in grey, thick where the pen pressed and hairline where it lifted, and he told you that a good line is one that seems to have been written in a single breath.

That was the thing I could never say to you. My breath was always short when you were near, and the words came out crooked, so I stopped trying and let the island say it for me. The gulls did. The tide did. Every evening you walked the breakwater to count the lights of the mainland, and I stood at the window and counted you back.

So here is the plain truth, written as quickly as a single breath allows. The envelope is for you. The lettering man was right about the lines. Come home on the Tuesday boat and read it yourself, and I will stand on the quay where you can see me, and we will both pretend the mist is not thick enough to hide anyone.
