Small solid star tattoo on the hand
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand with fingers loosely curled shows a small, solid black five-pointed star on the back of the hand near the thumb. The star has crisp edges and an even fill, with no visible shading or colour. The plain beige background and soft focus keep attention on the tattoo and the hand.

The well at Harrowgate had been dry since the castle emptied, and nobody in the village went near it after dark. Maud went anyway, because her goat had wandered into the old courtyard after the thistles and would not come out, and she had no mind to lose a good nanny to the ruins.

She found the goat at the lip of the well, bleating down into the black. Leaning over the stones, she saw a light at the bottom, no bigger than a thumbnail, lying in the mud where the water used to be. It was a star. She knew it by its five points, though it had gone the colour of wet slate and its edges had softened as if it had lain out in the rain for a hundred years.
Lower the rope, the star seemed to say. Maud did not hear it so much as know it, the way you know a draught has come into a room. She tied the rope to the iron ring, let herself down hand over hand, and cupped the little thing in her palm. It was cold as a coin from the river. Going back up, she felt it grow heavier, then lighter, and by the time her boots found the courtyard stones it weighed nothing at all.
Maud carried it home and pressed it into the back of her hand, because that was the only place it would sit. The old lord's wife had once told her that every fallen star was a promise somebody had broken, but she had never learned what the promise was, and the star did not say. It only sat there, dark and neat. On clear nights the gap it had left in the sky was filled again, and the goat, which had never once looked up, began to look up.
