Flame emblem tattoo design in orange and grey
Mixed · Flash
A drawn tattoo design of a stylised flame emblem with angular, jagged edges, filled with orange, red and yellow bands and small highlight shapes. Soft grey pencil shading swirls around the emblem like smoke, with the paper left white in places. The emblem sits centrally with the smoke trailing off to the edges, and a dark partial object appears in the bottom right corner.

Tobias Cray had banked the furnace at ten, and by two in the morning the pot-room was the only warm place in Stourbridge. He raked the ash from the glory hole with a hook worn smooth by his father's hands, then stood back to let the heat find him. The gather in the crucible had gone the colour of a struck match, and he knew from the sound it made that the glass was ready to be worked.

Ada Marsh came down the iron stairs at half past two with a tin of cold tea and a message she did not want to give. The works foreman had sold the contract for the chapel windows to a firm in Birmingham. "They want the patterns by Monday," she said. Tobias looked at the sketch she held out, a flame cut into three jagged tongues with a smudge of grey smoke curling around it, the emblem the Ashby family had asked for. He had drawn the first version himself in pencil on the back of a payroll sheet, and the smoke had come out wrong, too heavy, more like weather than air.
He took the blowpipe and turned the gather, letting the orange run down into the mould. The bands had to go in order, red at the base, then yellow, then the thin white line that would hold the light. Ada watched his hands. She had learned the trade from her uncle, and she knew that a flame in glass is only ever a lie told carefully. He lifted the piece to the lamp and saw the faint haze the air had left in its surface, soft as breath on a window.
At dawn he wrapped the panel in sacking and carried it out to the cart himself. "It's not the smoke they'll ask about," Ada said. "It's whether the flame will hold." Tobias looked back at the furnace mouth, still glowing, and said nothing, because fire had never once asked his permission to stay lit.
