Ada Penhallow had three days to make the lamp before the spring tides, and the metal would not take the shape she wanted. Her father had cut the rays by hand for forty years, each flame bent back on itself like a fox's tail, and he never once let a ray come out the same as its neighbour. Ada hammered them flat on the anvil in the back of the chandlers' yard while the gulls quarrelled on the roof, and she kept the ring for last because the ring was where the trouble lived.

The star went in first, five points cut from a strip of brass that she soldered with the wrong flux and had to scrape clean with a knife. Some of the old men on the quay said a star in a ring would hold a light in and keep the wrong things out. Ada thought that was nonsense, but she had learned to be careful with nonsense. When the sun was finished she stood it in the window, and the late light came through the gaps between the rays and laid their shadows across the floor like a second, darker crown.

On the third night the fog came in thick off the bar and the Mary Lowe failed to return. Ada carried the lamp down to the slipway herself, turned its face to the water, and lit it. The flames threw their long bright shadows out over the grey, and for an hour nothing answered. Then a horn sounded, faint and off to the east, and she kept the wick trimmed until the boat came nosing in under the sun's gaze.
