Pentagram inside a circle
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
The image is a clean black outline drawing of a five-pointed star, or pentagram, with its points touching a larger encircling ring. The lines are uniform in weight with no shading, and the star's overlapping strokes are drawn as simple outlines against a plain white background. The composition is symmetrical and centred, with the star filling most of the circle.

The big top had been sold off in pieces since March, the red canvas going first to a scrapyard in Kettering, and by October Marjorie Vane was the only one left who still swept the ring each morning. Sawdust had gone grey with rain. She knelt at the centre, where the old brass plate was set into the boards, and drew with a stick of chalk the thing her father had drawn every opening night: a circle, then a star inside it, five points touching the rim like fingers on a hoop.

Behind her the rigging creaked. Tomas, the last of the high wire men, sat on an upturned crate with a bottle of cider between his boots, watching her with the patience of someone who had been owed wages since the summer. "Your dad's star never once put a foot wrong," he said. "Wobbled every time, mind."
She laughed, and the laugh surprised her. The star had always been a joke between them: her father swore it kept the lamps from guttering and the lions from fretting, and nobody had ever asked him to prove it. Marjorie traced the line where the strokes crossed, the place where a point doubled back on itself, and remembered being six and told that you could walk the whole star without lifting your pen.
She tried it now, chalk in hand, one unbroken loop from the top point down to the bottom left, across and round again. It closed. The circle held. Tomas took a long drink and set the bottle down.
"Right," he said. "Tell the buyers it was yours."
