The fiddler at the Bellmoor hall had not been sober since Lammas, and everyone agreed he played better for it. So when a tall stranger in a black coat asked for a tune nobody had heard, the lads at the bar laughed and said he could have it for a penny. The stranger put down two pennies and asked again.

Old Nan Crewe, who sold pies from the back door, said afterwards that the fiddler took up the bow as if his father had handed it to him, and that the strings went quiet before he touched them. The tune, when it came, had no beginning. It went round the room like smoke looking for a window. Boots lifted off the boards. The lamps along the rafters bent their flames towards the floor, and a ring of sparks rose from the stove and hung above the dancers, turning slowly, until they made the shape of a sun with a star set in its middle.

Nobody danced after that. The stranger finished the tune alone, folded the two pennies into the fiddler's cracked case, and went out into the rain. In the morning the boards were scorched in a perfect circle with five points, and the fiddler's bow was found standing upright in the mud of the lane, soot fanned along its length like feathers.

The fiddler never played in Bellmoor again. But on still nights, when the moon sat low over the mill, Nan said you could hear a single string sounding from the empty hall, and see two dark wings of smoke rising from its chimney to meet the stars.
