Flamingo and hibiscus on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A pink flamingo with a curved neck rises beside purple hibiscus flowers, with a leaf sprig visible among them. Behind the flamingo sits a sun or sunset in teal, orange and yellow, split by a black diagonal band. Bold black outlines and smooth colour blends define the design, which is shown against a grey stone wall.

Don't touch the salt, Tobias, it's been on those pans since your grandfather's day and it knows your fingers. Sit where I can see you. Right. The flamingo came in on the spring tide, the year the lighthouse lamp failed. Nobody saw it arrive. It was simply there one morning, standing on one leg in the brine pool at Mallow Point, as if it had paid the ferryman and was waiting for its change.

Old Hester Quill said it was a bad omen, because flamingos don't come north unless somebody far off has forgotten them. She kept a stall of hibiscus tea and bruised limes by the quay, and every evening she brewed a pot and carried a cup down to the water. The bird would take the rim of the cup in its beak, drink, and fold its neck back into a question mark. That was the whole arrangement for three summers.
Then the hibiscus on her wall went purple overnight, bigger than anyone had seen, and the sea turned the colour of a peach just before the sun went down. The bird stopped coming to the quay. Hester walked the salt pans every dusk for a week, calling it by a name nobody else knew.
On the eighth evening she found it at the far edge of the pans, standing in the last of the light, wings half open, the water behind it gone orange and teal and gold. She didn't go closer. She poured the tea onto the sand, and the bird lowered its head and drank from the ground, and that was how she knew it had finally decided to stay.
