Fleur-de-lis tattoo on the inner wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small fleur-de-lis sits on the inner wrist or forearm, drawn in black ink with a loose, hand-sketched outline. The shading is uneven and textured, with darker areas in the petals and centre. The skin is warm-toned against a dark background, with gold and black chain bracelets and beads at the edges of the frame.

The snow has come early to the Col de Brisa, and the lily stamped on the boundary stone is the only mark still standing where the path forks. You wipe the frost off it with your sleeve, the way Old Tomas taught you, and the iron comes up dark under your glove.

Tomas had carved the fleur into every post between Brisa and the valley town of Serrat, three petals curving out like a pair of tongs around a spear. He said the old surveyors cut them to show where the toll ended and the safe ground began. You never asked which surveyors. You learned instead that the top petal pointed the way up, the two curls warned of the drop on either side, and the stem was for the one who stays with the mule.

Gaspard has refused the fork twice now. Cloud is pouring over the ridge like a sheet pulled off a bed. You scrape the lichen from the centre of the stamp with your knife, and the line beneath runs loose and quick, sketched rather than cut, as if the mason had been hurrying and didn't care who saw his hand. Somewhere below, a bell answers yours. Someone else is climbing the wrong side.

You tap the stem twice, the signal Tomas used for turn back, and then you turn the mule's head towards the bell instead. The lily still points where it always pointed, down into the white. Tomas would have grumbled about it. He would have followed anyway.
