Fine black outline tattoo of a four-leaf clover on the inner wrist, drawn in a thin, simple line.

Small four-leaf clover on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small four-leaf clover is outlined in black ink on the inner wrist, with three heart-shaped leaves and a fourth leaf formed by two short stem lines. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is filled only with the bare skin tone. The tattoo sits centrally on the wrist against a plain, softly lit background.

Dear Tom,

The vicar caught me at the reception and asked whether the clover on the order of service was a misprint. It wasn't. Your mother drew it herself on the back of a seed packet, three hearts and the fourth leaf made from two stalks that never quite meet, because she said a lucky leaf should look like it's still growing. Nobody argued with her. Nobody argues with Margaret when she has a biro in hand.

Then the marquee filled and the rain held off, which the forecast swore it wouldn't. Your bride spent the afternoon on the lawn with her shoes in one hand, pressing little white clovers from between the croquet hoops into the pages of the guest book. I found her at the gate at six, dress hitched up, squinting at the verge with her tongue between her teeth. She found one. Of course she did. She held it up to me like a winning ticket and said, "Don't tell him, he'll only want to keep it."

I'm writing because I still have the leaf. She gave it to me to hold while she danced with her father, and I forgot to give it back. It's flat now between two sheets of greaseproof paper in my wallet, soft as a thumbnail. I thought you should have it. Three hearts and a pair of stalks, and nobody ever told the fourth leaf which way was the right one.

Love, Uncle Dennis
