Flock of birds on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand and forearm are held out toward a blurred sea and pale sky. A flock of about eight small black birds in flight runs diagonally from the wrist up towards the elbow. The birds are simple solid silhouettes with no shading, and the image is in natural, muted tones.

"Mind the rope, Tomasz, or the gulls will have your bait before the tide turns." Old Ines said it without looking up from her nets, the way she had said it every morning since the boats went out past the breakwater and did not all come back.

Eight birds came in over the harbour that spring, flying low and ragged, the way terns fly when they have been a long way on too little. They did not settle on the wall. They came down instead on the bow of the Santa Clara, which had been drawn up on the slip since the winter, and they sat there in a row as though someone had asked them to wait to be counted.
Ines counted them. Seven was what the village had lost to the storm, counting the two brothers who never came home from the north banks. Eight was what she had been waiting for, though she would never have said so aloud. Nobody in Porto Lusso said such things aloud until the sea had already said them first.
When the tide turned, the birds lifted together and went out over the water, bending their line toward the open grey where the boats had gone. Tomasz swore they were heading home. Ines only pulled her shawl tighter and said that a flock knows its own count, and a flock also knows when it is finished with a harbour.
