Flash sheet of three floral bouquets in teal, blue and orange with a monarch butterfly and the script words Always and Forever, in a flat illustrated style.

Floral bouquets with Always and Forever script

Botanical · Colour · Flash

The sheet shows three separate floral bouquets: a teal and mint arrangement on the left, a bunch of orange berries and green leaves in the centre, and a larger cluster of blue flowers, cream roses and a monarch butterfly on the right. Between the bouquets sits the black handwritten script phrase Always and Forever. The linework is clean and flat with simple shading and no visible gradients, and the palette uses muted teal, blue, orange, olive and cream on a plain white background.

The rain had found the gap in the awning by half past seven, and it dripped steadily onto the bucket of teal eucalyptus Ruth kept meaning to move. She had sold from the same pitch on Hanover Row for thirty-one years, and she still wrapped every bouquet as though the customer were judging her from across the street. Today the customer was a boy of perhaps nine, soaked to the knees, holding a ten-pound note as if it might dissolve.

He wanted something for his nan, who was in the Royal Infirmary and who had told him, he said, that nobody ever bought her blue flowers. Ruth pulled the blue delphiniums forward, then the cream ranunculus, then a sprig of orange physalis from the tin behind the scales. "Your nan's got taste," she said. He asked whether the little orange lanterns were poisonous. "Only to people who eat them," said Ruth, and he laughed, which was what she had been hoping for.

She tied the stems with garden twine, not ribbon, because ribbon went limp in weather. The card on the stall said nothing useful, and the boy admitted he couldn't spell much past his own name. So she took the pencil from her apron and wrote on a torn strip of brown paper, in capitals that leaned: ALWAYS AND FOREVER. "That's what you say," she told him. "Whatever she tells you about the blue ones."

He went off up the row with the bouquet held out in front of him like a lantern, dodging a man with a tarpaulin over his head. Ruth watched until the crowd closed behind him. Then she picked up the delphinium stems that had dropped, wiped the wet from the bucket with the heel of her hand, and noticed that the monarch which had ridden the cream roses all morning was gone too, lifting off over the fishmonger's into the grey.
