Honeysuckle vine stencil design
Botanical · Colour · Flash
The image shows a curving vine with several coral-red honeysuckle-style flowers, green leaves and clusters of small blue berries. The shapes are flat and outlined with solid fills and no shading, resembling a stencil or design sheet rather than a tattoo on skin. The flowers are arranged along the length of the vine, which sweeps across a plain white background.

Dear Nell,

The honeysuckle came through the wall again last night, and I have stopped pretending I can keep it out. Father planted it the spring you left, a single cutting he brought back from the mainland in a jam jar, and it has never once behaved the way he wanted. It climbs the north wall, turns at the corner where the lane bends, and now it has reached the gatepost. The coral trumpets open in the evenings, and the whole lane smells of them by the time the ferry horn sounds.
The berries are another matter. Mrs Tully from the shop says they will make a child very poorly, so I have been picking them off before the baby from next door finds them. They are the blue of the sea on a clear morning, and they grow in little clusters, as if someone counted them out and then lost count. I keep one in the saucer on the windowsill. It has gone dry and wrinkled, but I can't bring myself to throw it away.
Mr Tully says the vine will be the death of the wall within five years. Perhaps it will. But on Thursday I found a new shoot curling out past the gatepost, reaching for nothing in particular, and I thought of you going down the gangway with your hand up against the wind. I didn't pull it. I tied it loosely to the wire instead, so it can keep going.
Write soon. The post boat is late, so I will wait.
Love, Ada
