Floral lace band on wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a black ink tattoo, an ornamental band of floral and lace-like motifs wrapping around the wrist and lower forearm. The linework is fine and detailed, with some shaded petals and scrolling patterns. The hand, wearing a silver ring with a blue stone and dark nail polish, is shown against a grey top, jeans and a plain clinical background.

Brother Anselm sends you to the scriptorium with a pot of lamp-black and a warning that the abbot will count the margins. The vellum is a psalter for the new priory at Wenlow, and the border of the first page is still bare. You have spent three winters copying other men's letters, and nobody has asked you to draw anything but the capitals.

You start with a single stem curling out from the initial, the way ivy climbs the chapter house wall in summer. Then a bud, then a second bud that opens like a fist unclenching. Brother Anselm stands behind your stool and says nothing, which is how you know he is pleased. By vespers the margin is a band of lace, the petals shaded with hatching so fine that the candle seems to move inside them.
The dean sees it at compline and orders the page scraped. Ink, he says, is for the word of God, not for wandering vines. You fold your hands and say nothing. That night you go back with a penknife and a stolen quill and make the same band again, smaller, on the inside of the wooden board where only the binder will ever see it.
