Floral lace tattoo on hand and wrist
Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the back of a hand and wrist, with a detailed floral lace-style tattoo spreading from the wrist across the back of the hand. The design uses fine, dense linework and grey shading to build up leaves, scrolls and openwork patterns. The image is in soft natural light against a black sleeve and a pale lace fabric, with a wristwatch and a ring in the frame.

The lace came off the bobbins in the back room over the chapel, and my mother never let anyone touch it until it had been pinned to the board and blessed by the thread itself, or so she claimed. I was nine when I first saw the pattern she was working for the bishop's sister, a flourish of acanthus and fern that ran into itself like frost on a window. She taught me to count the pairs. Forty-two bobbins, forty-two pairs of hands in my head, and never once look up while the pins were going in.

When the fever took her hands, the work passed to me, and so did the bishop's sister, who came every Thursday to sit in the window and complain about the damp. She wanted the leaves finer. She wanted the scrolls to open like a fist unclenching. I told her a pattern cannot be rushed, and she told me that was what her husband used to say about his horses, and that she had outlived both.
I finished the piece in February with the lamp smoking and the stove gone out. I laid it across the window ledge to dry, and the morning light came through the openwork and threw a hundred small leaves across the floor. My mother's old watch ticked on the nail beside the door. The bishop's sister never came back for the lace. She left the money in an envelope under the board, and I kept the pattern, copying it onto my own wrist in ink when nobody was watching, one stitch at a time.
