Metallic temporary triangles and mandala on hand

Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo

A hand rests on a knee, showing gold and silver metallic temporary tattoos on the back. The designs include outlined triangles, a filled lotus-style mandala, and a fine ornamental pattern running down towards the wrist. The metallic ink catches the light against a dark wristwatch and blue ripped denim.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third tide of the signal season, Mara pressed the last gold triangle onto the back of her cousin's hand and told him not to rub it. Foil transfers didn't survive sweat, she said, and the pass through the drowned quarter was nothing but sweat and bad air. Tomas held his wrist out like a sleepy dog offering a paw and watched the metal catch the lamp.

Each mark meant something to the couriers of Sallow Ring. Outlined triangles pointed toward the water gates. The filled lotus, dense as a bruise, meant the sealed ration crate was waiting at the second pump. The fine ornament that ran down towards the wrist was the route itself, a lacework of turns that a runner who had walked it blind could read by touch. Mara had copied it from her grandmother's pattern book, the one that had survived two floods and a fire.

Halfway down the stairs to the flooded arcade, Tomas stopped and pushed his sleeve up. The silver had dulled to the colour of old coins. He traced the ornament with his thumb, counting turns, and realised the last loop did not close. Mara had left it open on purpose, a gap for the gate code he was meant to add himself. He had never learned it.

He stood in the cold water with the watch ticking against his pulse and tried to remember the numbers the way she had taught him, one loop at a time, until the seventh hour on the dial lined up with the first gold triangle and the gate groaned open ahead of him.
