Floral realism full sleeve with birds and sunflower

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A full sleeve tattoo runs from the shoulder down the arm, filled with sunflowers, dahlias, pansies, blackberries and leaves. Two birds, a hummingbird in flight and a small songbird perched near the shoulder, are rendered with soft shading and fine detail. Bright pinks, yellows, purples and greens dominate, with the three photographs showing front, side and back views of the same sleeve.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mari had promised her father she would keep the bees, but by the second summer she had given up on bees and planted everything else. Pansies went in along the wall because they were the first thing to open after frost. Dahlias came next, great heavy heads that the wind knocked about, and sunflowers at the gate so the village boys would have something to climb that was not the chapel roof.

The songbird came first, a brown thing with a red breast that sat on the water butt and would not be shooed. Mari gave it crumbs. By August it was eating from her palm, and she told herself that was only hunger. The hummingbird arrived later, in the week the blackberries ripened on the hedge, and it hung over the pansies as if the air had been stitched there for it.

The tax man came in September with his ledger and his bad boots. He looked at the sunflowers and said the land was wasted on things that did not feed anyone. Mari said nothing. He walked the garden twice, counting, and when he reached the far corner the hummingbird rose out of the dahlias and went straight past his ear. He flinched, and in flinching he lost his pencil in the blackberries.

He never found it. Mari swore the pencil went to the bird. Every year after, the hedge gave more fruit than it should, and the tax man's sons came to the gate asking the way to the wild flowers, and she sent them there with a basket.
