Realistic rose and flower full sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A full sleeve of realistic red roses, orange lilies and pink plumeria flowers, with scattered loose petals, covers the arm from upper arm to forearm. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft highlights on the petals and leaves set against a blue and green background. The image shows four views of the same arm, and the colour is bright and saturated throughout.

You are halfway up the stepladder at four in the morning, the fog still lying flat across the stubble outside Doncaster, and the last rose on the Waltzer panel refuses to open. Cadmium red, a touch of black to sink it, then a flick of white for the wet shine that Mr Pargeter swears the crowds will pay for. The generator thrums under its tarpaulin. Somewhere behind the dodgems a dog is barking at lorries that have not yet moved.

Pargeter took you on at sixteen because you could make a lily look like it had been breathing. He ran the Sky Chair and the Cake Walk and a gaudy caravan called the Blue Lagoon, and he liked his paint wet and his flowers loud. You learned the trade on his wagon sides: roses first, then lilies with their orange throats, then the pink plumeria his wife had brought back from a cousin's wedding in Tenerife, petals thick as a child's fingers. Every spring the whole fair turned its back on winter and bloomed.
This season there is one petal left undone, a loose one, curling off the edge of the gondola and drifting over the blue water. You keep meaning to finish it. Pargeter says leave it. A painted thing that looks like it is falling will stop a girl at the gate faster than a bloom that stays put, and the girl at the gate has always been the reason.
When the light comes up grey you wipe the brush on your sleeve and climb down. The petal is still wet. A gust off the field lifts it clean from the panel and it lands on your boot, red as a fresh cut, and you stand there holding the brush, waiting for the paint to set.
