Rose tattoo on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A close overhead photograph of a person's upper leg, with a black and grey tattoo of roses and leaves on the thigh. The tattoo uses fine outlines with soft grey shading, and the roses sit at the top of the frame above the sock line. The composition also shows a laptop, a phone, a sushi box and a patterned blanket around the leg.

Pull your chair in, love, and mind the cat, because the lift on the fourteenth floor has been broken since before your mother was born, and everybody in Hadley Court knows what grows up there. Old Mrs Pearl kept a rose on her balcony in a tin bath she'd dragged up from the Co-op skip. Nobody believed a rose could take root fourteen floors up, with the wind coming off the car park like a blade and the pigeons lined along every ledge. But she spoke to it each morning with her tea going cold in her hand, and it leaned towards her like a dog wanting its ears rubbed.

The council man came round with a clipboard in the spring. He said the balconies were a hazard, that the tub had to go, that a rose was not a permitted fixture. Mrs Pearl sat him down, poured him a cup of tea and asked him to wait while she fetched the scissors. She cut one bloom, black at the edges from frost, and pinned it to his lapel. Then she told him that anything growing fourteen floors up without a ladder had earned its place. He went down the stairs with the petal still on his coat, and nobody saw him at Hadley Court again.

After she passed, the rose kept going. Its leaves spread over the rail and its stems hooked into the railings like fingers. On the night the whole estate went dark, the rose was the only thing you could make out from the car park, and the children came out in their dressing gowns to look up at it. The bath was full of rainwater, the bloom was open, and the cat sat on the rail watching the stairwell as if it were waiting for someone to climb.

So if you ever find yourself on that landing with no lift and a grey cat at the door, knock twice and ask for Pearl. Mind the thorns on the third step. She never did trim them back.
