Small arrow tattoo on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small arrow tattoo is drawn in thin black linework on the ankle, pointing diagonally up towards the shin. The rest of the frame shows a patterned pink, blue and green pair of leggings, an open laptop and a spiral planner on white bedding. The tattoo is the only area of skin in focus and is shown in a simple, unshaded outline style.

The snow had been coming sideways since four o'clock, and by the time I reached the bottom field I could no longer see the top of the hedge. Dad was in the lambing shed with the torch and a ewe who had gone off her feed, and he had sent me for the spare colostrum from the chest freezer in the back kitchen. I had it inside my coat, wrapped in a tea towel and pressed against my ribs like something I'd stolen.

Grandad painted those arrows on the gateposts the winter before he died. He started with red, then used whatever tins were left in the barn, so they came out in mustard and chalk-blue and one that was nearly pink. Each one pointed the way to the shed, because a man could walk the wrong side of a field in a whiteout and never know it. I had always thought them a bit silly. Dad kept saying he would repaint them and never got round to it.
At the stile the post had lost most of its paint under the snow, so I brushed the top with my glove until the arrow showed, faded to a ghost of red. It did not point towards the shed at all. It pointed up the slope, past the shed, to where the old farmhouse sat with its kitchen light on. I stood there with the cold seeping through my boots and understood that he had never been painting the way to work. He had been painting the way back.
I turned round, and there was the yellow window, small and steady, exactly where the arrow had been telling me to look. I followed it up the hill with the colostrum warm against my side and the snow filling in behind me.
