Floral tattoo on upper arm beneath a sleeve
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A woman wearing a dark t-shirt printed with the words 'I will make better mistakes tomorrow' and an open maroon cardigan stands outdoors on a gravel surface. Partly hidden by the sleeve, a tattoo on her upper arm shows red and pink flowers with green leaves, rendered in filled colour with soft outlines. The shallow focus and warm, low light place the tattoo at the edge of the frame, with the cropped head and torso dominating the composition.

Dear Nell,

The Michaelmas fair pulled onto Harrowgate Common on Tuesday, and the wagon panels came out of the tarpaulin looking like they'd been left in a hedge all winter. You'd have laughed. Mr Oakes wants the roses done before the Saturday crowd, and I have eleven panels to do and a pot of vermilion that has gone as thick as porridge in the cold.
On Thursday I painted a whole rose the wrong way round, the petals folding inward like a fist, and Mr Oakes stood behind me with his pipe and said nothing for a long time. Then he said, "Paint it again, girl, and paint it better." So I did. I sat up with the lamp, mixing the pink with a dab of white until it matched the inside of a shell, and I gave the leaves a second green so they'd look like they'd had rain on them.
Friday morning the mist lifted off the common and the whole field smelled of diesel and cut grass. The children came round the wagon in a crowd, and little Edie Parr pressed her finger onto a petal that was still wet and left a print in it. I didn't scold her. I told her every rose on this fair has somebody's fingerprint hidden in it somewhere.
I'm going to paint a small one on the inside of my trunk lid tonight, so that when I'm packing up in the dark I'll have something to look at that came out right. Write back before we move on to Ashby.
Your loving sister, Peg
