Floral tattoos on legs and arms with a dog

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A person sits or stands beside a seated brown and white dog, with both hands resting on its sides. Their arms and legs are covered in colour tattoos of roses, daisies, leaves and a skull, with bold outlines and solid fills. The composition is cropped at the head and shows the tattooed limbs against a plain light background, with teal sneakers at the bottom.

The dog had been sitting on the hot shoulder of the Calder Flats road since before Nell's van gave up, and it did not get up when she climbed down from the cab. It just watched her with the patience of something that had already decided she was coming. Its collar was a faded navy strap with a tag shaped like a bone, and it smelled of creosote and old rain.

She had a bundle of rose cuttings in the back, given to her by her sister for a garden neither of them would ever see again, wrapped in wet newspaper and going limp in the heat. Nell knelt and let the dog sniff her knuckles. The tag said MOSS, and beneath that a phone number with the last four digits scratched away. Moss leaned his whole weight into her shins, as if he had been waiting all afternoon for someone to do exactly that.

They walked the four miles to Hollis Wells together, the dog keeping to the crumbling white line as if it were a pavement. The filling station had a painted skull on the pump sign and a tin bucket of daisies by the till. The attendant, a thin man called Teodor, said Moss came out to the bus stop every evening and waited for a bus that had stopped running years ago. Nobody had the heart to tell him, he said, and nobody had the heart to take the dog in either.

Nell planted the cuttings in the tin bucket beside the daisies, half of them already brown at the edges. She filled a dish with water and set it on the concrete. Moss drank, then lay down across her boots and sighed. The sun dropped behind the flats and turned the whole road the colour of copper, and the bucket of flowers, somehow, had begun to open.
